Hitchin a Ride...

When your bike breaks down in Africa, you hitch-a-ride on a Boda Boda... From bikes to full size refrigerators, we witnessed all sorts of odd items being transported on these small motorcyles on our journey through Uganda.
Queen Elizabeth Elephant...

On our boat ride through the Kasinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Game Reserve, this big guy ran alongside our boat for a while before stopping to take a drink of water. Wild Bush Elephants are such huge creatures and just amazing to watch in the wild. The biggest ever recorded was a bull that weighed 10 tonnes and stood 4 meters at the shoulder
Ngamba Island...

Just after sunset on Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda, Africa. Ngamba Island is a small 105 acre island located just south of the Equator on Lake Victoria in East Africa and is home to a chimpanzee sanctuary that houses 48 orphaned Chimpanzees. Visiting this island was absolutely amazing and if you have a chance to visit there I highly suggest it!!
Bwindi National Park...

We had this amazing view from our hotel in Bwindi National Forest. In typical rain-forest fashion, this beautiful day turned to fog and thunderstorms just a few hours later...

Savannah Elephants of Queen Elizabeth...

Queen Elizabeth National Reserve in Uganda is a huge place that is filled with all types of wildlife including the African Bush Elephant. African bush elephants are the largest living land mammals and the second tallest after the giraffe. The biggest ever recorded was a bull that weighed 10 tonnes and stood 4m at the shoulder. The large ears, formidable tusks and strong trunk all add to their physically striking appearance.

African elephants have remarkably complex and interesting social lives. Their society is guided by the oldest female called a matriarch. She determines when they eat, rest, bathe and drink. They feed on grass, tree foliage, bark, twigs, herbs, shrubs, roots, and fruit. Altogether, elephants consume more than 225 kilograms (500 pounds) of vegetation a day, spending hours eating it. Due to their large size, African Bush Elephants must drink water daily.

Damaged Warthog...

We came across this guy as we were heading out of Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda. He was bleeding pretty badly from what looks like a battle wound from the tusk of another male Warthog. Warthogs are wild members of the pig family that live in grassland, savanna, and woodland in Sub-Saharan Africa. Their name comes from the four large, wart-like growths found on the head of the warthog. These growths serve as a fat reserve and are used for defense when males fight. Although capable of fighting, males only aggressively fight each other during mating season. The warthog's primary defense is to flee by means of fast sprinting but they can and do inflict mortal wounds on predators, including formidable Lions, Leopards, Crocodiles and Cheetah's. Their sharp tusks can penetrate even the thickest hides and battles sometimes end with their adversaries bleeding to death.
Lake Mburo Zebras...

Upon our arrival in Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda, Africa, we were immediately greeted by tons of Zebras. They were everywhere in this expansive park that is located on the boarder of Uganda and Tanzania. Lake Mburo lies in a rain shadow between Lake Victoria and the Rwenzori Mountains and subsequently receives an average of 800 mm of rain a year. Zebras consist of several species of African equids united by their distinctive black and white stripes, which come in different patterns that are unique to each individual. They are generally social animals that live in small harems to large herds. Unlike their closest relatives, horses and asses, zebras have never been truly domesticated due to the zebra's more unpredictable nature and tendency to panic under stress. Have you ever wondered if a Zebra is white colored with black stripes? Or black colored with white stripes? Well genetic research now shows that the Zebras background color is black and the white stripes and bellies are additions. It is likely that the stripes are caused by a combination of factors including:

1. The vertical striping may help the zebra hide in grass. While seeming absurd at first glance, considering that grass is neither white nor black, it is supposed to be effective against the zebra's main predator, the lion, which is color blind.

2. Another hypothesis is that since zebras are herd animals, the stripes may help to confuse predators—a number of zebras standing or moving close together may appear as one large animal, making it more difficult for the lion to pick out any single zebra to attack.

3. It has been suggested that the stripes serve as visual cues and identification. Although each striping pattern is unique to each individual, it is not known whether zebras can recognize one another by their stripes.

4. At least two experiments indicate that the disruptive colouration is an effective means of confusing the visual system of tsetse flies.
Vervet Monkey...

The Vervet monkey is an Old World monkey native to South and East Africa. The Vervet monkey is grey in color and has a black face with a white fringe of hair around it. The males of all species have the infamous pale blue scrotum and a red penis which is an important status symbol in their groups. Basically, the more colorful their reproductive parts are, the higher their social rank is. Vervet monkeys also serve as non-human primate model for understanding genetic and social behaviors of humans. They have been noted in having human-like characteristics, such as hypertension, anxiety, and are even known to have alcohol abuse problems in areas where they have easy access to the substance. Resort guests often discover that if they leave their drinks unattended with these monkeys around, the monkeys will steal them for themselves.
