Stormy Chicago Sunset...

There was a lot of energy in the air on this warm summer afternoon in Chicago. Thunderstorms rolled though the city all day but the clouds broke up just enough at sunset to put some amazing color in the sky. Unfortunately there was a Bears pre-season game on this night and there was gridlock traffic all over the palace. Most of the other good spots to shoot the skyline from were closed so I drove frantically to make it to this spot to make it here before all the color was gone. I ran all the way from the parking lot with just enough time to set up my tripod and camera, snapped 1 photo, and then it started pouring. Walking back to the Jeep was not fun, I was literally soaked by the time I reached the lot, but at least I got this shot...
Chicago Summer Storm Clouds in B&W...

Storm clouds roll over Chicago on this cool summer day in August. The past 24 hours or so has been amazing for cloud formations here in Chicago so I have been out shooting as much as I can. These clouds are a mix between Cumulus Mediocris and Towering Cumulus Congestus. Cumulus Mediocris clouds are common in the advance of a cold front or in unstable atmospheric conditions such as an area of low pressure. They often grow into the larger Towering Cumulus Congestus which could bring rain, winds and in worse cases, thunder and lightning. Presence of these clouds in the morning or early afternoon indicate significant instability in the atmosphere and often lead to storms later in the day.
Navy Pier Saturday Night Fireworks Chicago Skyline Panoramic...

Each summer in Chicago, Navy Pier offers up a pretty sick fireworks display every Wednesday and Saturday night. Here is the view of the fireworks display from the Adler Planetarium, one of my favorite locations to watch the display. This was a special night however, since Lollapalooza 2012 was going on in grant park. Red Hot Chili Peppers were playing on one of the main stages and we could hear the music quite well echoing off the buildings. They also had a few multi-colored spotlights shining high in the sky, which helped give the clouds some color that normally would not be there. If you look closely, you can see the blueish hue in the top center of the photo and some lighter orange in the clouds over the AON center, both areas were lit up by those lights which added a cool effect in my opinion. The weather was nice and cool and it was a perfect night to watch the display. If your in the Chicago area and want to check out the schedule of upcoming displays, you can do so here: http://www.navypier.com/things2do/fireworks.html

Chicago Wacker Street Bridge Panoramic...

180 degree panoramic view of the Chicago skyline from the Wacker Street bridge. If you look closely, the round building left center of the photo is marina tower, which is home to the Chicago House of Blues. The bridge in the distance in the center of the photo is the LaSalle street bridge and the muli-tiered building just to the right of the bridge is the LaSalle-Wacker Building, which was completed in 1930, consists of 41 stories, and has a beacon on the top that can be seen from over 200 miles away on a clear day.

Chicago Navy Pier Sunset....

This is another favorite location of mine to showcase the magnificent Chicago skyline at sunset because it offers an amazing view of both the skyline and the sunset, it showcases the navy pier ferris wheel, and there is usually no one else around. This night was absolutely amazing to watch the sunset. It was not too hot, there was a strong northerly wind, and the light was just beautiful. In the tent seen in the foreground, there was the Cirque Shanghai acrobatic act performance going on. The intense oriental themed music made for some nice ambient sounds and every couple of minutes the roar of the crowd could be heard in appreciation of their daredevil acrobatic feats.

North Avenue Beach Chicago Panoramic...

North Avenue Beach is always busy in the summertime, especially on days where the temps rise over 90 degrees. Daily beach volleyball tournaments, roller hockey, jet ski rentals, and even a full service beach bar make this a great spot to head to on those warm summer days. In addition to all of the extracurricular activities at North Ave, its also one of my favorite spots to photograph the magnificent Chicago skyline and on this hot and humid day, nature put on quite a show. Heat thunderstorms rolled through the city all day but by sunset the clouds broke up just enough to add some beautiful pink color in the sky.

Kinzie Street Rail Bridge Panoramic...

The Kinzie Street railroad bridge is a single leaf bascule bridge that crossed the north branch of the Chicago River in downtown Chicago. At the time of its opening in 1908 it was the world's longest and heaviest bascule bridge. From 1930 to the 1980's, the bridge handled all of the incoming freight traffic for the Navy Pier, Tribune Tower, Merchandise Mart and Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. From the mid 1980's until 2000, the bridge usage steadily declined and by the early 90's, the Sun-Times was the only customer, with 1 train per-day crossing the bridge. Designated a Chicago landmark in 2007, the bridge has sat unused since 2000, when the Sun-Times moved their printing facility to the suburbs.

South Loop Storm Clouds Panoramic...

This past week we have seen some amazing clouds over Chicago and on this summer afternoon the clouds were especially ominous looking. This huge storm cloud rolled over the city, sprinkling very light showers randomly as it passed by. There was a forceful north westerly wind and these clouds were moving quite rapidly above the city. Watching the movement of the clouds was awesome and while I was eagerly awaiting a rainbow, unfortunately one never appeared.
