Official Photographer for the Country's Largest Dental Convention
The Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting is the largest dental convention in the United States, drawing approximately 30,000 dentists, dental team members, specialists, students, and industry exhibitors to McCormick Place each February. Organized by the Chicago Dental Society, the largest local component of the American Dental Association, the Midwinter Meeting is a three-day event combining a world-class exhibit hall with continuing education programs, hands-on workshops, and professional networking.
CDS contacted Jamie Link Photography directly to take over as official photographer for the 2026 meeting. They were looking for a fresh approach to event photography and wanted a production partner who could handle the full scope of coverage across all four days of the event, across multiple venues and event types simultaneously.
The contract included everything: trade show floor photography in the exhibit hall, educational seminar coverage, afterparty and networking event photography, and FPV drone filming through the convention floor, all under a single agreement.

Managing Coverage at Scale
Photographing a 30,000-person convention is a fundamentally different production challenge than a single-booth trade show shoot. The exhibit hall at McCormick Place West spans hundreds of thousands of square feet. Educational seminars and afterparties run simultaneously in separate areas of the building. No single photographer can be in all of those places at once.
To cover the full scope of the event, Jamie directed a photo team across the four days of production. Coverage was coordinated to ensure simultaneous capture of exhibit hall activity, seminar sessions, and evening events, with Jamie leading the team and handling the FPV drone operation personally.
For event organizers and associations managing large-scale conferences, this kind of coordinated coverage matters. The CDS Midwinter Meeting generates marketing assets that are used throughout the year, in member communications, sponsorship packages, exhibitor recaps, and promotional materials for future meetings. A fragmented or inconsistent photo library undermines all of those use cases. A directed team with a unified visual approach produces a cohesive archive.

FPV Drone Filming on the Convention Floor
Among the most distinctive elements of the 2026 coverage was contracted FPV drone filming throughout the exhibit hall. Flying FPV in a populated convention environment requires FAA Part 107 certification, experience navigating constrained indoor spaces, and the ability to execute precise flight paths through a live event without disrupting exhibitors or attendees.
The FPV footage produced a perspective of the Midwinter Meeting that no ground-level camera can replicate: a continuous, cinematic sweep through the exhibit hall at speed, weaving between booths, above crowds, and across the full expanse of the show floor. For CDS, this footage serves as a marketing asset in a category of its own. It captures the energy and scale of the event in a way that still photography and conventional video cannot.
FPV operation in a live convention environment is genuinely technical work. Booth structures, hanging signage, overhead rigging, and moving attendees all create a dynamic obstacle environment. The goggles-on operation visible in the BTS images shows what that looks like in practice: full immersion in the drone's first-person view while navigating one of the most complex indoor environments in Chicago.
Four Days of Coverage Across the Full Event
The 2026 Midwinter Meeting production covered every dimension of the conference across four days of active shooting. The deliverable library included photography from:
-
Trade show floor coverage throughout the exhibit hall, capturing exhibitor booths, product demonstrations, and attendee engagement
-
Educational seminars and continuing education sessions, covering speakers, hands-on workshop environments, and audience interaction
-
Afterparties and evening networking events, capturing the social and professional dimensions of the conference beyond the show floor
-
FPV drone video footage providing cinematic aerial perspectives of the exhibit hall at scale
The breadth of coverage ensures CDS has a complete visual archive of the 2026 meeting, usable across membership communications, exhibitor relations, social media, print, and forward-facing promotional materials for the 2027 event.

What This Production Demonstrates
The CDS Midwinter Meeting represents the upper end of large-scale event photography in Chicago. Taking over as official photographer for a 30,000-person convention, directing a photo team across four days of simultaneous coverage, and executing contracted FPV drone filming on the live show floor are not tasks that a single-shooter or generalist event photographer can absorb.
For associations, conference organizers, and event producers evaluating photography and video partners for large-scale events, the production logistics matter as much as the portfolio. Who is directing the team? How is coverage coordinated across multiple concurrent event spaces? Who is accountable for the full archive? And when FPV footage is part of the brief, who has the certification and the live-event experience to execute it safely in a populated venue?
McCormick Place is one of the most demanding production environments in the country. The Midwinter Meeting is one of the largest conventions held there annually. Producing comprehensive, high-quality visual coverage of that event, including capabilities most photographers cannot offer at all, is the kind of work this case study exists to document.
